Finding a Trekking Company in Nepal: Our Experience with Royal Holidays Adventure for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

When we started planning the Manaslu Circuit, one of the first and biggest decisions we had to face wasn't about gear or training. It was deciding which company to trek with. Because we were traveling with a large group and most of our friends had never stepped foot in Nepal before, our absolute top priority was finding a reliable, trustworthy operator with excellent English communication.

And let's be completely honest: traveling to a developing country for the first time can feel a little intimidating. When you're unfamiliar with the local infrastructure, your main concern is safety and logistics. We wanted a reliable team who could handle everything seamlessly from airport pick-ups to keeping us safe on the mountains without any communication barriers.

As we mentioned in our comprehensive trail guide, a guide is mandatory to hike the Manaslu Circuit. This naturally narrows down your choices compared to more open regions. However, we would strongly recommend hiring a guide for any trek in Nepal, regardless of the legal rules. Not only does it ensure your safety, but you also gain a deeper, firsthand understanding of the local culture and history. Plus, it directly supports the local economy. Tourism is one of Nepal's primary income generators, and hiring locally ensures your money impacts the right hands.

Key Factors to Consider Before Booking Your Trek

Before you start reaching out to different trekking agencies, you need to map out your specific requirements. Here are the core variables we evaluated before making our choice:

Group Size

If you are traveling in a large group, a single independent guide simply won’t cut it. You need an established agency that can support you with a team of lead guides, assistant guides, and porters to manage the group safely. Because our group was large (there are 10 of us!), independent freelance guides weren't an option for us; we needed an operator with deep operational capacity.

Private vs. Group Tours

We have trekked in Nepal twice now, and both times we opted for a private tour. If you are in a financial position to afford it, we highly recommend this route. The price difference between a public group departure and a private tour is surprisingly minimal when compared to the overall cost of an international trip.

As introverted hikers traveling with close friends, a private tour was worth every penny. The biggest advantage is that you get total flexibility. You get to control your start dates, daily pacing, trail timing, and custom pick-up or drop-off locations. It makes your trip a whole lot less stressful if you happen to be a slower hiker.

Choosing a Reliable Trekking Company

If you search for "Manaslu Circuit Trek tours" on Google, you will be hit with an overwhelming wall of results. Operators quote anywhere from $850 USD to over $2,000+ USD for the exact same route.

While there are slight variations in what each package includes (such as specific meals or transport options, you need to look past the price tag and do your "due diligence" to pick one that will match your expectations. Here are a few things we looked at when we did our research:

  • Recommendations from Friends or (Real) Reviews: The absolute safest bet is to go with an operator recommended by someone you know or one with a consistent, positive online reviews. Look closely at the comments to ensure they are "real" accounts written by actual trekkers rather than generic, fabricated reviews from bot users.

  • Website and Social Media: Browse their website to ensure it looks legitimate and professional. Also, head over to their Instagram and Facebook pages to see they regularly post photos of real groups they've hosted on the trail.

  • Test Their Communication Before Committing: Before booking anything, send an initial email with a few specific questions about your plans. A good tour operator will respond promptly, demonstrate helpfulness, and show a genuine understanding of your personal requirements.

  • Beware of Scams (But hear us out): You might read about helicopter insurance scams or fly-by-night operators. Fortunately, this is highly uncommon. Nepalese people deeply understand that tourism is vital to their country, and the vast majority will go completely out of their way to host you perfectly. Still, doing your due diligence is essential. Going with a trusted recommendation eliminates that stress entirely.

  • Check the Itinerary: If you are joining a fixed group tour, check the daily itinerary. Ensure the ascent profile is manageable for your fitness level and includes appropriate acclimatization days built-in (crucial for any trek crossing a 5,000-meter pass). If you choose a private tour, a great company will customize these rest days based on your hiking experience level.

How We Picked Our Trekking Company

First, we decided to completely avoid international travel agencies based outside of Nepal (like big international names like G-Adventures, The Mountain Company, or Much Better Adventures based in the US or UK). These agencies are almost always significantly more expensive. While they market themselves as "luxury and trusted" operators, the experience on the mountain is identical. Why? Because almost all international trekking companies don't actually run the ground logistics themselves. They have partnership agreements with local trekking providers behind the scenes.

Essentially, you are paying a massive premium just for the company name and the peace of mind. Personally, if you have done your research thoroughly, going direct with a local company makes much more sense in terms of value. Most local operators provide a reliable, trustworthy, and incredibly positive experience. By booking directly with a local company, you cut out the expensive corporate middleman, and you make the ethical choice to keep your tourism dollars directly inside the local economy.

A Note on Pricing: We would still be wary if a trek is priced too low or seems impossibly budget-friendly. In many instances, those low prices are achieved by underpaying the guides and porters, which fuels an unhealthy price competition among local agencies.

Second, we wanted to ensure we were dealing with a real person on the other end of the line, not an automated system or an AI chatbot. Sandip, the owner of Royal Holidays Adventure, was extremely helpful. He was responsive and clear in his communication, which gave us total confidence from our very first email exchange.

In the end, we chose Royal Holidays Adventure, a locally run Nepalese company that ticked all of our boxes regarding price, reputation, communication, and flexibility. Even though they were a relatively small local agency when we booked with them, looking back, it was one of the best decisions we made for the entire trip.

Full Disclosure: We only ever recommend services we have personally used and loved! We booked direct with Royal Holidays Adventure and can't recommend them enough. Our Experience with Royal Holidays Adventure

Pre-Trip Planning

We coordinated our entire trek directly with Sandip, the owner of the company, and the planning process was flawless. Because our group consisted of ten hikers with widely varying levels of trekking experience, we had to find a plan that works for all.

Sandip took the time to understand exactly what our group needed. He was responsive and highly professional. He even provided detailed packing lists months in advance, which was a massive help for the members of our group who were completely new to multi-day trekking.

Kathmandu Logistics

Royal Holidays Adventure took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nepal days before our trekking tour even started.

Sandip kindly arranged airport pickups across multiple different days since some of our group members arrived in Kathmandu earlier than others. The team supported us in sorting out local SIM cards, exchange currency at fair rates, and arranged private transport transfers for group members traveling from separate locations. They even handled our hotel bookings, recommended great local restaurants to try, and set up custom city sightseeing tours around Kathmandu. It completely removed the stress of navigating Kathmandu, which is quite overwhelming if it is your first time here.

Trail Experience and Culture

You can read plenty of reviews online where trekkers feel their guides were disengaged, simply walking ahead on their own without sharing any real local insight. Our experience was the absolute polar opposite.

Because we had ten hikers all moving at entirely different speeds, Royal Holidays Adventure assigned two guides to our group, ensuring absolutely no one was left behind or felt rushed. Our lead guide was exceptionally experienced, having led the Manaslu Circuit trek over 60 times! His experience and deep connections with the region completely transformed our trek.

Through his relationships, we were invited to a Tibetan family home, managed to ride horses on our acclimatization day, and were even treated to an off-menu meal of fresh chicken cooked in the traditional Nepalese way. His sharp eyes spotted endless wildlife on the cliffs that we would have walked right past.

We had a great time with the crew, but they also maintained a safety-first mindset. While we shared a lot of laughs, there was a strict "no alcohol on the mountain" policy enforced for safety and acclimatization, which we happily saved for a celebratory drink together once we successfully made it back down to civilization on our final day.

Genuinely Ethical

An company’s treatment of their staff was a non-negotiable factor for us. We were determined to book with a company that treats its guides and porters with fairness

Royal Holidays Adventure proved to be an ethical company. Sandip works with a consistent, tight-knit team of guides and trusted freelancers he has known for years. Rather than handing our large group to whoever happened to be available, he intentionally matched us with a guide team whose style, energy, and experience perfectly fit our group's dynamics.

The exact same ethical care was applied to our five porters. The company enforces a strict weight limit, adhering perfectly to the fair industry standard of a 30kg maximum load per porter. There was absolutely no overloading or corner-cutting. This respectful, fair treatment was exactly why the energy on our trek was so fantastic, we had so much fun with our porters, even joining them and the local village kids for an unforgettable game of football on the school pitch in Samagaun at over 3,500m!

Support & Safety

The experience of the guides matter immensely when you are pushing past a 5,000-meter alpine pass. Every single guide on our team was fully qualified, licensed, and trained to manage acute mountain sickness (AMS).

We appreciated the daily debrief - every single evening at the teahouse, our guides sat down with us to thoroughly brief us on the next day’s itinerary so that everyone in our group knew exactly what terrain, distance, and elevation to expect. During this time, they also checked on our health, monitoring how everyone was physically feeling and adapting to the altitude.

The office in Kathmandu remained contactable by phone and satellite throughout our entire itinerary. If anyone in our group had experienced a medical emergency requiring a sudden change of plans or a helicopter evacuation, we knew we had a dedicated team on the other side who knew our names, held our permits, and could mobilize assistance instantly.

Why Did We Choose Royal Holidays Adventure?

Choosing a local, ethical, and well-connected company made a massive difference, not just to our wallets, but to our entire experience. We felt incredibly looked after by a team who knew the Manaslu region well and cared about doing things properly.

When we booked this trip, Royal Holidays Adventure was still a relatively small, growing local agency. After having such an incredible experience on the trail with them, we were keen to partner up with them so that more people can experience a smooth, positive trek in Nepal without the stress of picking a bad operator. Nepal remains one of our favorite places in the world for trekking, and it is a true lifetime experience that we think everyone should get to experience at least once.

We want to be completely transparent with you guys, and we have never partnered with another trekking company before this. We are incredibly protective of our blog and our readers, and we made a promise to ourselves that we would only ever recommend services that we have personally used and vetted ourselves.
