If you search for "Manaslu Circuit Trek tours" on Google, you will be hit with an overwhelming wall of results. Operators quote anywhere from $850 USD to over $2,000+ USD for the exact same route.
While there are slight variations in what each package includes (such as specific meals or transport options, you need to look past the price tag and do your "due diligence" to pick one that will match your expectations. Here are a few things we looked at when we did our research:
Recommendations from Friends or (Real) Reviews: The absolute safest bet is to go with an operator recommended by someone you know or one with a consistent, positive online reviews. Look closely at the comments to ensure they are "real" accounts written by actual trekkers rather than generic, fabricated reviews from bot users.
Website and Social Media: Browse their website to ensure it looks legitimate and professional. Also, head over to their Instagram and Facebook pages to see they regularly post photos of real groups they've hosted on the trail.
Test Their Communication Before Committing: Before booking anything, send an initial email with a few specific questions about your plans. A good tour operator will respond promptly, demonstrate helpfulness, and show a genuine understanding of your personal requirements.
Beware of Scams (But hear us out): You might read about helicopter insurance scams or fly-by-night operators. Fortunately, this is highly uncommon. Nepalese people deeply understand that tourism is vital to their country, and the vast majority will go completely out of their way to host you perfectly. Still, doing your due diligence is essential. Going with a trusted recommendation eliminates that stress entirely.
Check the Itinerary: If you are joining a fixed group tour, check the daily itinerary. Ensure the ascent profile is manageable for your fitness level and includes appropriate acclimatization days built-in (crucial for any trek crossing a 5,000-meter pass). If you choose a private tour, a great company will customize these rest days based on your hiking experience level.
How We Picked Our Trekking Company
First, we decided to completely avoid international travel agencies based outside of Nepal (like big international names like G-Adventures, The Mountain Company, or Much Better Adventures based in the US or UK). These agencies are almost always significantly more expensive. While they market themselves as "luxury and trusted" operators, the experience on the mountain is identical. Why? Because almost all international trekking companies don't actually run the ground logistics themselves. They have partnership agreements with local trekking providers behind the scenes.
Essentially, you are paying a massive premium just for the company name and the peace of mind. Personally, if you have done your research thoroughly, going direct with a local company makes much more sense in terms of value. Most local operators provide a reliable, trustworthy, and incredibly positive experience. By booking directly with a local company, you cut out the expensive corporate middleman, and you make the ethical choice to keep your tourism dollars directly inside the local economy.
A Note on Pricing: We would still be wary if a trek is priced too low or seems impossibly budget-friendly. In many instances, those low prices are achieved by underpaying the guides and porters, which fuels an unhealthy price competition among local agencies.

Pre-Trip Planning
We coordinated our entire trek directly with Sandip, the owner of the company, and the planning process was flawless. Because our group consisted of ten hikers with widely varying levels of trekking experience, we had to find a plan that works for all.

Our lead guide was exceptionally experienced, having led the Manaslu Circuit trek over 60 times! His experience and deep connections with the region completely transformed our trek.
Through his relationships, we were invited to a Tibetan family home, managed to ride horses on our acclimatization day, and were even treated to an off-menu meal of fresh chicken cooked in the traditional Nepalese way. His sharp eyes spotted endless wildlife on the cliffs that we would have walked right past.
We had a great time with the crew, but they also maintained a safety-first mindset. While we shared a lot of laughs, there was a strict "no alcohol on the mountain" policy enforced for safety and acclimatization, which we happily saved for a celebratory drink together once we successfully made it back down to civilization on our final day.

This respectful, fair treatment was exactly why the energy on our trek was so fantastic, we had so much fun with our porters, even joining them and the local village kids for an unforgettable game of football on the school pitch in Samagaun at over 3,500m!

The experience of the guides matter immensely when you are pushing past a 5,000-meter alpine pass. Every single guide on our team was fully qualified, licensed, and trained to manage acute mountain sickness (AMS).
We appreciated the daily debrief - every single evening at the teahouse, our guides sat down with us to thoroughly brief us on the next day’s itinerary so that everyone in our group knew exactly what terrain, distance, and elevation to expect. During this time, they also checked on our health, monitoring how everyone was physically feeling and adapting to the altitude.
The office in Kathmandu remained contactable by phone and satellite throughout our entire itinerary. If anyone in our group had experienced a medical emergency requiring a sudden change of plans or a helicopter evacuation, we knew we had a dedicated team on the other side who knew our names, held our permits, and could mobilize assistance instantly.
